Training For Life: Genbu-Kai Karate

Ever wonder what style we practice at Hillsborough Family Martial Arts, and about our Genbu-Kai Organization?

Shito-Ryu Karate, and Genbu-kai are all related to the practice of karate!

Shito-Ryu Karate is a style of karate that was founded in 1931 by Kenwa Mabuni. It is named after its two founders, Kenwa Mabuni and Chojun Miyagi, who were both respected martial artists in their own right. Shito-Ryu is a blend of two different martial arts styles, Shuri-te and Naha-te, which were both practiced in Okinawa, Japan. Shito-Ryu emphasizes both hard and soft techniques, and practitioners aim to develop strength, speed, and agility through training.

Karate-do is a philosophy of karate that emphasizes the development of character, discipline, and respect. Karate-do translates to "the way of karate," and it focuses on the mental and spiritual aspects of karate practice. Karate-do practitioners strive to improve not only their physical skills but also their mental and emotional strength.

Genbu-kai Shito-Ryu is a karate organization that was founded in 1999 by Shihan Fumio Demura, a student of Shihan Ryusho Sakagami. Genbu-kai’s meaning is “Gen” is original, beginning or professional. “Bu” is martial arts. Genbu-kai practitioners aim to develop strength, flexibility, and balance through training, and they also strive to improve their character and discipline. In addition to traditional karate techniques, Genbu-kai also incorporates training in weapons, such as the bo (staff) and sai.

Overall, Shito-Ryu Karate, Karate-do, and Genbu-kai all have their own unique aspects and histories, but they are all related to the practice of karate and share the goal of developing physical and mental strength through training.

At Hillsborough Family Martial Arts we offer martial arts classes developed for each and very individual to reach their karate goals.
